Fourth Sunday of Lent Year C

Laetare comes from the Introit of the Mass, it means "Praise" in Latin. We are almost done with Lent so we are somewhat happy. On this day, flowers may adorn the altar and instrumental music may be played.

Instruction before the Celebration

At the start of the celebration, the commentator says
Good morning/afternoon/evening, brothers and sisters.
We are now in the Fourth Sunday of Lent,
Laetare Sunday, the Sunday of Rejoicing.

Our presider for this celebration is Fr. N.
Let us all stand and unite our hearts, minds and voices as we begin our celebration.

INTRODUCTORY RITES
Entrance
After the people have assembled, accompanied by a song, the presider and the ministers walk towards the sanctuary, reverence the altar and go to their places.

If there is no song, the antiphon is said
Is 66:10-11
Rejoice, Jerusalem! Be glad for her, you who love her; rejoice with her, you who mourned for her, and you will find contentment at her consoling breasts.

Everyone remains standing and makes the sign of the cross, as the presider says
In the name of the Father + and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Greeting
Then, the presider, facing the people, extends his hands and greets all present with
The Lord be with you.

Introduction to the Celebration
The presider or deacon or other suitable minister may very briefly introduce the Mass of the day in these words
What kind of Father would accept a son who not only asked for his inheritance while he is still alive but also wasted this money on worldly things? What kind of holy man eats and drinks with sinners? This is the kind of God we have: a Father whose arms are open for those who return to him and whose hands are open for those who trust in his providence. God is ever-merciful and forgiving. Not only did the Father forgive his prodigal son, he also threw a feast for him – the same attitude of God to us. This feast is the eucharist, the memorial of Jesus’ death and resurrection that reconciled humanity to God. Until now, God welcomes those who strayed and Jesus eats with sinners.

Act of Penitence
The priest invites the people to recall their sins to repent of them in silence with
My brothers and sisters*,
to prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries,
let us call to mind our sins.
Please kneel.
After the silence, the presider leads the people in saying the Confiteor
I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have sinned through my own fault, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do; and I ask Blessed Mary, ever virgin, all the angels and saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord, our God.
The presider then says
May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life.

Father of peace, we are joyful in your Word, your Son Jesus Christ, who reconciles us to you. Let us hasten toward Easter with eagerness of faith and love. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

LITURGY OF THE WORD
Introduction to Reading I
The commentator says
The Israelites celebrate Passover on the Promised Land, which God gave them. The Passover meal recalls the salvation wrought by God and the reconciliation of a prodigal people.

Reading I Jos 5:9a, 10-12
The lector proceeds with the proclamation.
A reading from the book of Joshua.
A short pause follows. Then, the lector continues with the reading.
The LORD said to Joshua,
“Today I have removed the reproach of Egypt from you.”

While the Israelites were encamped at Gilgal on the plains of Jericho,
they celebrated the Passover
on the evening of the fourteenth of the month.

in the form of unleavened cakes and parched grain.

God is so forgiving that through the sacrifice of his son, we were reconciled to him and through the ministry of the Church, even if we are sinners, we can still return to him.

Reading II 2 Cor 5:17-21

A reading from the second letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians.
A short pause follows. Then, the lector continues with the reading.
Brothers and sisters:
Whoever is in Christ is a new creation:
the old things have passed away;
behold, new things have come.
And all this is from God,
who has reconciled us to himself through Christ
and given us the ministry of reconciliation,
namely, God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ,
not counting their trespasses against them
and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation.
So we are ambassadors for Christ,
as if God were appealing through us.
We implore you on behalf of Christ,
be reconciled to God.
For our sake he made him to be sin who did not know sin,
so that we might become the righteousness of God in him.

Tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to listen to Jesus,
but the Pharisees and scribes began to complain, saying,
“This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.”
So to them Jesus addressed this parable:
“A man had two sons, and the younger son said to his father,
‘Father give me the share of your estate that should come to me.’
So the father divided the property between them.
After a few days, the younger son collected all his belongings
and set off to a distant country
where he squandered his inheritance on a life of dissipation.
When he had freely spent everything,
a severe famine struck that country,
and he found himself in dire need.
So he hired himself out to one of the local citizens
who sent him to his farm to tend the swine.
And he longed to eat his fill of the pods on which the swine fed,
but nobody gave him any.
Coming to his senses he thought,
‘How many of my father’s hired workers
have more than enough food to eat,
but here am I, dying from hunger.
I shall get up and go to my father and I shall say to him,
“Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you.
I no longer deserve to be called your son;
treat me as you would treat one of your hired workers.”’
So he got up and went back to his father.
While he was still a long way off,
his father caught sight of him, and was filled with compassion.
He ran to his son, embraced him and kissed him.
His son said to him,
‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you;
I no longer deserve to be called your son.’
But his father ordered his servants,
‘Quickly bring the finest robe and put it on him;
put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet.
Take the fattened calf and slaughter it.
Then let us celebrate with a feast,
because this son of mine was dead, and has come to life again;
he was lost, and has been found.’
Then the celebration began.
Now the older son had been out in the field
and, on his way back, as he neared the house,
he heard the sound of music and dancing.
He called one of the servants and asked what this might mean.
The servant said to him,
‘Your brother has returned
and your father has slaughtered the fattened calf
because he has him back safe and sound.’
He became angry,
and when he refused to enter the house,
his father came out and pleaded with him.
He said to his father in reply,
‘Look, all these years I served you
and not once did I disobey your orders;
yet you never gave me even a young goat to feast on with my friends.
But when your son returns
who swallowed up your property with prostitutes,
for him you slaughter the fattened calf.’
He said to him,
‘My son, you are here with me always;
everything I have is yours.
But now we must celebrate and rejoice,
because your brother was dead and has come to life again;
he was lost and has been found.’”

  5. That our community may have the open arms of the father to those who need us, we pray.
  6. That our community may not shun those who do not conform to the norm and sinners but instead accept and give them the chance to change, we pray.

Lord, you are merciful and forgiving. Help us to seek you and melt our hearts so that we, your disobedient children, may have the confidence to come to you. We ask this through Christ our Lord.
